FAQ: Configuring Connect Settings

   
 

In order for your MicroBase Professional installation to communicate with your MicroVib II, you must determine which RS-232 COM Port is to be use for communication, and then configure MicroBase Pro to utilize this COM Port.


1. Use The MicroBase Pro Ports & Hosts Detection Tool (MicroBase Pro v2.20 Build 1410 and up)

To review different MicroBase Pro to MicroVib II Connection Types, click here, then use the following steps to configure MicroBase Pro to MicroVib II communication:

  • Connect your MicroVib II to your PC using one of the following methods:
    • MicroVib II -> Cable 1311 -> Hardware Serial Port
    • MicroVib II -> Cable 1311 -> USB Adapter -> PC USB Port -> Virtual Serial Port (requires driver)
    • MicroVib II -> Cable 2145 -> PC USB Port -> Virtual Serial Port (requires driver)
  • Power up the MicroVib II. Once it has finished booting, press the MODE Menu item.
  • Configure MicroBase Professional:
    • Start MicroBase Professional.
    • Click Options - Connect Settings.
    • Click Find Ports & Hosts.
    • MicroBase Pro will report the Serial Ports available for use, including your MicroVib II connection.
    • Select the desired COM Port number, then click OK.

2. Use Windows Device Manager

Use the following steps to configure MicroBase Pro to MicroVib II Communication:

  • Connect your MicroVib II to your PC using one of the following methods:
    • MicroVib II - Cable 1311 - PC Serial Port
    • MicroVib II - Cable 1311 - USB Adapter - PC USB Port
    • MicroVib II - Cable 2145 - PC USB Port
  • Open Windows Device Manager:
    • If you are using Windows 2K/XP:
      • Click the Windows Key + Pause
      • Click the Hardware Tab
      • Click Device Manager
    • If you are using Windows Vista/7/8/10:
      • Click the Windows Key + Pause
      • Click Device Manager
  • Locate a useable RS-232 Serial Port:
    • Look for the Ports (COM & LPT) category, then expand it.
    • Look for an entry which contains a COMX designation (where X is the Serial Port number)
    • Note the COM Port number (ignore any LPT entries).
  • Configure MicroBase Professional:
    • Open MicroBase Professional
    • Click Options - Connect Settings.
    • Select the desired COM Port number, then click OK.

3. What If I Can't Locate A Usable COM Port?

  • Open Windows Device Manager as described in #2 above.
  • If the Ports (COM & LPT) category does not exist (or if there are no COMX entries displayed), then your computer does not have a working RS-232 Serial Port:
    • If your MicroVib II is connected to the PC via a USB Connection you need to install a driver to create a virtual COM port. Driver installation steps are here.
  • If the Ports (COM & LPT) category is shown and contains COMX entry with the port number outside the MicroBase Pro supported range of 1-9:
    • Open the driver properties.
    • Select advanced configuration.
    • Select an unused COM Port number in the appropriate range.
    • If all of the supported COM Port numbers are in use by other devices (rare), then you will need to uninstall one or more of the drivers, and then try to reconfigure the COM Port number again.
