FAQ: Troubleshooting MicroBase Pro Database Permissions

If the MicroBase Pro software program is not permitted full read/write access to it's database files , communication ports, and the Internet, the installation will suffer various issues described in DSS Service Bulletin DSS-SB-20180601.

Note: the steps below require considerable familiarity with Windows and Security Software settings. If these steps are unfamiliar or confusing, you may need to engage the services of an IT professional.

1. What Behaviors Suggest A Possible Permissions Problem?

The Following symptoms (most common listed first) suggest MicroBase Pro is not permitted Full Read/Write Access to its Database Files:

  • Database summary (shown next to username at bottom left) indicates X of 0 (zero) Items.
  • MicroBase Pro attempts to Restructure its Database Files on each startup.
  • MicroBase Pro fails to display valid data items in the Database View Window or the Selection List Window.
  • MicroBase Pro will not "remember" settings changes (username, options, etc.) after restart.
  • MicroBase Pro crashes or displays Error with file: HEADER.DBT (or HEADER.DBF) when identifying raw files.

The Following symptoms suggest MicroBase Pro is not permitted full access to Communication Ports or the Internet:

  • MicroBase Pro will not permit downloading raw files via the Data Manager Window.
  • MicroBase Pro cannot download Application Files (App Notes, Groups, Machine Files, etc.).
  • When Online with valid Network Login, MicroBase Pro is unable to send messages.
  • MicroBase Pro crashes when Online and the user attempts to send or receive messages.

The most likely cause of these behaviors are:

  • Internet Security / Anti-Virus software may not permit MicroBase Pro to have full read/write access to it's data files, communication ports or the Internet.
  • Windows permissions may not allow MicroBase Pro to have full read/write access to it's data files.
  • Network Security may not permit MicroBase Pro to have full Internet (HTTP) access.

2. Update MicroBase Pro To The Most Recent Version

The instructions in the sections below apply to the most recent version of MicroBase Pro. Therefore you must update your installation using the instructions contained in the MicroBase Pro Update FAQ before continuing.

3. Disable Windows Defender / Internet Security / Anti-Virus Software
  • Temporarily disable your Windows Defender, Internet Security, Anti-Virus software, or any other software that might interfere with MicroBase Pro.
  • If this corrects the issue(s) described in the first section, you will need to create an exception to permit MicroBase Pro to operate without restriction.

4. Check Windows Permissions And For Corruption/Damage
  • Locate your MicroBase Pro Data Folder:
    • Open MicroBase Pro, click Help - About MicroBase.
    • Scroll down the list to the section labeled Installation Info.
    • Note the folder indicated by the Data: tag. This is your MicroBase Pro Data Folder.
    • The default MicroBase Pro data folder is C:\Users\Public\Documents\Dss\MicroBase
  • Check permissions of your MicroBase Pro Data Folder:
    • Use Windows File Explorer to drill down to your MicroBase Pro Data Folder.
    • Check that the logged Windows user has full read/write permissions in the MicroBase Pro Data Folder (and all sub-folders).
    • Note: If using the default data folder, full control should be provided to the everyone group.
    • If needed, correct these permissions.
  • Check each folder for corruption/damage:
    • Insure you can open and read contents of each subfolder.
    • Run Windows drive checking tool to find disk system errors.
